This is the artist porfolio published in the Asheville Citizen Times Newspaper on 01-24-10.I work in an abstract expressionist mode using reverse glass and cracked glass painting with acrylic paint. I use strong contrasting colors to set off a vibration in the viewer's eye. My reverse glass painting is done by first putting very abstract colors on the glass. I then scratch out the design and add contrasting color. The cracked glass starts by breaking a piece of glass and then cold-fusing the broken pieces to another piece of glass. Paint is added to the broken top pieces of glass. I scratch out the subject and then paint on the back of the glass. I have several bodies of work. That includes the “Beautifully Broken” series and “If I Was A Bi-Pod” that deal specifically with how the disabled view the world.
Why do you do what you do?
I don't have a choice. I'm unhirable. After my car accident, I felt I was put back on this planet to share my art with the world.
Tell us about your latest projects:
I am now working with my wife, Cathy, and using her hypertufa planters to make rock gardens. I then use wood found on our property and hang a reverse glass painting from it. It is very rustic and primitive and has a strong handmade feel to it.
What are you doing that no ones else is?
I haven't seen many artists using the disabled in their work. When I started painting again, I looked for anyone using the disabled in their work. After not finding any, I decided to use myself with my crutches as a subject matter.
What influences your work?
Life and the struggle to survive in a mainly nondisabled world.
When is your most creative time?
All the time. I never know when an idea is going to pop in my head. It's like magic. I sometimes wake up and write notes from my dreams.
How did you get started in your work?
After I became disabled, I needed to refocus my life. I took some mechanical drafting classes but couldn't stand the straight lines. I also took some art classes and was blown away by it all. Color, form, self-expression.
What is your muse?
Waking up every day surrounded by life itself.
Who is the artist you most admire?

A table made by Cathy & David Krafcik. Cathy made the top out of Hypertufa and I constructed the base from wood found on our property. The size is 2 feet x 2 feet and stands 18 inches tall. Here's Bill the Bear The Table Top. Bill is a Reverse glass Painting I got done for the TRAC tour. He is centered in the middle of the work and on the outside are images that are related to the bear. Native American signs, track prints, Mother Earth and Grandfather sun. My interest in sign and symbols are always being played out in my work. The color is first, setting up a vibration using of warm and cool colors. scratching through the background to reveal the foreground, but leaving the background mixed into the foreground to complete a whole image. he is mounted on a wood rustic table. "The Weight of the World" a new piece of work from the "Cracked Glass" series. I have always loved to use contrasting colors together. It sets off a vibration in the work. It helps to tone down the colors a bit so the whole painting does not vibrate too much and puts a hurt on your eyes. Using two forms of glass painting , painting on top of the glass and reverse glass painting helps draw your eye into the art. The art is on two pieces of glass adhered to each other using cold fusion. Tonight is our gallery opening and a Yancey county mixer and ribbon cutting to go along with it. Here it is. The new and fresh beginning. The start of a new advenure in the mountains of WNC. People have been soooo nice to us. We did our first craft show on Saturday and were happy with the results. Still setting up shop. I have built a new sand-blasting booth and am creating new animal designs to go along with the mountain animals. We also have 3 acres of useable land. Looking forward to doing some farming, creating some food products to sell at all the farmers markets. In all my years I don't think I have ever felt so happy, safe and inspired. "Dance Between the Moon and Sun" sold, SOLD, S-O-L-D at the Ponte Vedra Cultural Center Members Show on December 7,2007. The work is two pieces of 3/8" plate glass adhered together. The back glass is painted on the back and then all the front is painted. When dry, I scrape off the coat of paint to reveal what is underneath the glass.

Another new Reverse Glass Painting. It is called "The Gathering". The glass art is done on a 12" x 17"x 1/4"thick piece of glass. I used a glass stain as the color and drilled holes through the four corners of the glass so I could place rods to get distance off of the art used a white painted piece of wood to hold and to hang the art. Put two fluorescent lights, one on the top one on the bottom, behind the glass to illuminate the painting. The work is from my E-Erts Log. A group of trees in a meadow talking about the good times. I'll tell ya it can be such a waste of time. Every one has big ideas about raising the bar, what ever that means, at the gallery. One artist QUIT because he was offended by a new artist pictures. HE calls himself an artist but wants art censored. I say good riddance. good luck in communist China. Another artist thinks the gallery is not up to their standards. they do not even know the other artist names. HE thinks we need to do more for sales and then misses meetings and does not work when he is schedule to work and the gallery is not opened. Go figure. My last gripe and then i will stop this madness.I sold a piece of art over a month ago and still have not gotten paid for it. I am just glad I don't run my business that way. I swear that there is no professionalism in this one horse town. People move down here and think they are IT. Well they are NOT...I feel better. This is a new window etching for a client. A 5'x3' Oak Tree. Each piece of bark on the tree was individually cut out by hand and the etched on to the glass. The piece sits inside the house connecting the main room to the reading room.The clients favorite number is three so i made the grass at the bottom of the tree in threes.

I was commissioned to do this glass carving over the holidays of a 5-50 Searay. I carved it on a 10"x12"13/8"thick glass. I also made the light stand to display this really cool carving. If i can see it i can carve it on to a piece of glass. Nuff said. David

Another of my Reverse Glass Paintings.This was created at Mullet Beach Gallery in St. Augustine Florida on December 9 2006. The title is "Bridge of Lions with Dolphin Sky". It measure 14"x14"x1/4"thick. I made it as a demonstration of how to make a reverse glass painting. I had to park very far from the gallery and the walk was long and also sporting a heck of a migraine headache. I am a trouper. I had the glass preped with black paint and sat at my little table in the front door and scratched out the design and added the color. It is now hanging in the north window of the gallery. I am asking $299.99 for the piece. It is signed in the bottom right hand .

Hey I'm back. This is a picture of me that was in a local mag. called Water's Edge. Nice article but they spelled my name wrong.It's KRAFCIK for goodness sake. Free publicity is better than no pub. at all. At least they got my web address right. The last time i posted I was doing a show at a local gallery. I was only going to be there a month , but the owner decided to leave town with out letting me get my art out at the end of the month and I got into another gallery for December. I had to scramble to get enough art to hang for a very important art walk. My best was left in the other gallery, which was closed, rich people should not dick over artist like that. When the dick over got back I got my art and moved it to the new gallery space. As i have said many times,"You can't trust any one in the business world, it is all about them."I also lost my one and only sale because i refuse to do business with this gallery. Yea I know, cut my nose off to spite my face, That's me. I will now be at the Energy Lab Gallery at 137 King Street Saint Augustine Florida. 904-808-8455. today's art offering is called "Eagle with Dinner." It is a Reverse Glass Painting by KRAFCIK. The size is 14"x14"x1/4" thick glass. I first spread black acrylic paint on the back of the glass, then with a cutting tool I scrape away the black to form the image. Colors are added and you have a finished art piece .

We have here today, brought to you from the deeps of the sea, made by the creatures that live there called the HUSH. The goblet is for drinking sea nectar of what ever land people sip on. It is 18oz. and has a beautiful carving of our friend the dolphin and the stem is frosted to add more beauty to the piece, as if that is necessary. It will be put on auction at eBay today for only $10.00. Starting next week I will have another web site with all the art of the HUSH. Yes, I have new carved glass art work. This is my new mermaid 18oz. Goblet design. I carved out the mermaid and also etch the stem. I put it on the eBay for auction starting a $10.00. I interested to see if there are any nibbles out there for this type of work. I also design goblets with three designs carved into them put takes more time and I charge more per item and I also sign each one. This piece will get one 3 1/2" design and the bottom will be initialed not signed so I can try and retail the items myself. Have a new dolphin I will put on the eBay and the bog Thursday. Hey I'm back. Been a while since I blogged. Went to see my Jags beat the Pittsburgh cockroaches on Monday and have been recovering ever since. Finished another part of my "Beautifully Broken" series. This art glass is 14"x14"x1/4" Reverse glass painting. The title is "All points in Between". To me this abstract Expressionistic glass art is my dilemma. I have been pushing the handicap thing of late. I started feeling sorry for myself. I have never been this low in my business life before. I have been pushing the wholesale carved glass for so long to run into a lot, not all, but a lot of people who do not know crap about art. They only worry about how cheap they can get it and sell it. Wal-mart,wal-mart,wal-mart. The disable card is a new one for me to play,but it does not matter. If art is good it is good. this piece of art is from my "Bridges" series. It is a reverse glass painting on a 6"x12"x3/8" piece of glass. The glass painting is in the fantasy art mode.
Using bright colors against the balks lines help the art to stand out. I have always liked to use color with black markings. It comes from growing up reading comic books and then later viewing expressionistic wood cut prints. I am again using the image of the disabled. The background color is warm and flowing and the foreground helps set the whole piece on fire. Today's art work is from my "Beautifully Broken"series titled "Dancing in the Moonlight"It is on a 12"x24"x1/4" Plate glass and is a reversed glass painting in the abstract expressionistic mode. Here I am combining dark cool color for the background and warm light colors for the fore ground. It is also another example of using images geared for handicapped art. The art vibrates with color but still has a balance that helps tie it all together. I am also balancing the soft abstract background with the scratching out of the foreground. The art has two holes drilled in the top that I place copper ties and nuts and bolts through it. A leather cord is then ran through the ties andthat is how it is hung..KEEP ART ALIVE..David

Tuesday. Yes Tuesday. My lest favorite day. Day to go hustle art around town. Knock on doors,have people look at me like I am some homeless person. What a day for the ol' ego. Well some one has to do it. First I get to deliver some sold items, thank goodness. Then wait for eBay to call so I can ask some questions on how to sell my art on their funny little web site. Then a whole bunch of reading on how to sell my art online. Just wish I could stay at home and create. That's life. Happy Labor Day. My wife and I will be celebrating this day by laboring. I have a glass carving job today, thank goodness. Things have been slow sine the Atlanta Gift Show boomed . Out hustling the streets again, looking for a way to sell my art and pay the bills. I have been working on reverse glass painting on and off since 1987. After my wholesale show tanked I started to paint again. It feels really good. The painting I am showing today is 14"x14"x1/4" thick plate glass. It is from a drawing of mine I have been working on and now have translated it to a painting. I love to put paint on the back of glass and then scratch it out. My colors are very bright to contrast against the black. The name of the piece is "Hurricane Force Winds." To me, my art is all about color and textures. Trying to look deep into my minds eye. Howdy, my name is David Krafcik. I am owner and artist of Visual Dialogue. I have been in the art business since 1987. I have worked the arts and craft scene, had retail stores and wholesale craft items. I am now working on a new series of reverse glass paintings called "Beautifully Broken" .
